School Musical
Picture
COURSE TITLE: School Musical

COURSE CREDIT: THEATREPRD

UNITS OF CREDIT: .5

COURSE LENGTH: Full Year

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The District Music department sponsors the school musical.  Through the use of scored music, rented scripts, theatrical lighting, costumes and choreographed dance, students create a full-length production in the style of a Broadway musical.  Performers audition for acting parts and participate in rehearsals for advanced dance, vocal training, acting and musicianship.

Students also develop a believable character by utilizing voice, observation skill and physical movement.  Students learn to differentiate between themselves and the character they portray. This multi-disciplinary approach enhances physical awareness, acting skills, ensemble work and effective communication on stage as well as increasing musical awareness and a growth in students’ self-esteem.   This course incorporates the New York State Standards in the Arts.

Students are encouraged to participate in stagecraft workshops as well.  All aspects of technical theater are explored including scenery and prop construction, the use of a pulley system to hang a backdrop, and the hanging and rigging of a full lighting system.  This part of the course incorporates the New York State Standards in Math and Technology.
